1 lb ground beef (or Italian sausage)

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes

4 cups beef broth

1 (15 oz) container ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

2 teaspoons dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

8-10 lasagna noodles, broken into pieces

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil, for garnish (optional)

Cook the Meat: In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef (or sausage) over medium heat. Add diced onions and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
