Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Prepare the Oven and Pan:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, allowing some overhang for easy removal later.

      Make the Brownie Layer:

        - In a medium saucepan, melt the 1/2 cup butter over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in the granulated sugar, eggs, and vanilla until well combined.

          - Mix in the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder until just combined. Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly.

            Prepare the Cookie Layer:

              - In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

                - Add the egg and vanilla extract, and beat until fully combined.

                  - Gradually mix in the flour, baking soda, and salt until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.

                    Assemble the Browkies:

                      - Spoon the cookie dough over the brownie layer in dollops, spreading it gently so that it covers most of the brownie batter but still leaves some gaps.

                        - Use a knife or skewer to swirl the brownie and cookie layers together gently, creating a marbled effect.

                          Bake:

                            - Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

                              - The edges should look set while the center may appear slightly underbaked, which is perfect for that fudgy texture.

                                Cool and Serve:

                                  - Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 15 minutes. Use the overhanging parchment paper to lift the browkies out of the pan and place on a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

                                    Enjoy:

                                      - Cut into squares and serve your delicious fudgy chewy browkies warm, or at room temperature. Pair them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat!
