Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast

¼ cup granulated sugar

1 tsp salt

1 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)

¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

½ cup filling (brown sugar and cinnamon mix, Nutella, or fruit jam)

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine the warm milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size (about 1 hour).

Shape the Dough: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into four equal portions. Roll each portion into a large circle, about 12 inches in diameter. Place the first circle on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Add Filling: Spread your choice of filling evenly over the first circle. Place the second circle on top and repeat the filling process. Add the third circle, and once again spread filling over it. Finally, place the fourth circle on top without any filling.

Cut and Twist: Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut the stacked circles into 16 wedges from the center out, leaving the center uncut. Grab two adjacent wedges and twist them away from each other, then pinch the ends to seal. Repeat for all wedges.

Final Rise: Cover the shaped star bread with a towel and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes, until puffy.

Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the star bread with the beaten egg to give it a golden brown finish. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool and Serve: Allow to cool for a few minutes before dusting with powdered sugar. Serve warm and enjoy the delicious, fluffy layers!
