Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened (plus extra for greasing)

2 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs, at room temperature

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup whole milk, at room temperature

Optional: powdered sugar for dusting or frosting of your choice

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan or two 9-inch round cake pans.

Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 4-5 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Alternate Dry Ingredients with Milk: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the whole milk. Start and finish with the flour mixture, mixing until just combined; do not overmix.

Pour and Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan(s) and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes for round pans or 40-45 minutes for a rectangular pan, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar or frost as desired.
