Ingredients

2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast

½ cup whole milk, warmed (about 110°F)

½ cup granulated sugar, divided

2 large eggs, room temperature

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 cups all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon salt

Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

1 ½ cups powdered sugar

3 tablespoons milk (or more for desired consistency)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)

Optional toppings: sprinkles, chopped nuts, or cocoa powder

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the activated yeast mixture, remaining sugar, eggs, softened butter, and vanilla extract. Mix well.

Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually add in the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead for about 5-7 minutes on a floured surface until the dough is smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Shape the Donuts: Once risen, punch down the dough to release the air. Roll it out on a floured surface to about ½ inch thickness. Use a donut cutter (or two round cutters) to cut out donuts and holes.

Second Rise: Place the cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and allow them to rise for an additional 30-45 minutes.

Heat the Oil: In a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C).

Fry the Donuts: Carefully place a few donuts at a time into the hot oil, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place them on paper towels to drain.

Prepare the Glaze: In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the milk amount for desired thickness.

Glaze the Donuts: Once the donuts are cool but still warm, dip each donut in the glaze, allowing excess to drip off. Optionally, add sprinkles or other toppings.

Serve: Enjoy your melt-in-your-mouth glazed donuts warm or at room temperature. Store any leftover donuts in an airtight container.
